Faces of Readiness: HM3 Nathan Thayer Extends Medical Readiness Through Telemedicine

ROTA, Spain - Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Nathan T. Thayer, assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Rota, helps extend access to care through his current work in telemedicine, supporting active-duty service members and their families.

Thayer contributes mission readiness by helping connect patients with healthcare support when distance or operational demands can make in-person care more difficult. His work helps patients address medical needs in a timely manner, supporting individual health, family stability and force readiness.

"I contribute to the military mission by providing noncompromising care to active-duty service members and their families," said Thayer.

Before moving into telemedicine, Thayer worked in Medical Home Port, a central part of primary care at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Rota. That experience supporting routine care and ongoing patient needs provided a foundation for his current role, where technology helps connect patients and medical teams beyond the limits of a traditional clinic visit.

Telemedicine strengthens Navy Medicine's ability to support a distributed force by expanding the reach of clinical expertise and helping patients receive guidance without unnecessary delay. Thayer contributes to a medical support network that helps sustain operations across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Away from work, Thayer enjoys the region's beaches and takes advantage of opportunities to run, fish and bowl.

“Being stationed in Spain has been an incredible experience,” said Thayer. “I enjoy the beaches and the culture, but what stands out most is working alongside our Spanish partners and building relationships with the local community.”

Looking ahead, Thayer hopes to take his medical skills directly to the operational fleet with an assignment aboard a guided-missile destroyer (DDG). Serving on a DDG would place him alongside the Sailors responsible for carrying out maritime missions and allow him to support their health and readiness at sea.

Today, Thayer supports Navy Medicine's mission from Rota by helping extend the reach of care through telemedicine. His progression from Medical Home Port to virtual healthcare support demonstrates how adaptable corpsmen help connect patients with care, preserve readiness and keep Sailors prepared to answer the fleet's call.

NMRTC Rota serves as a force multiplier in Navy Medicine's strategic global medical support mission throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East while supporting operational readiness and maintaining a strategic repository of expertise at Naval Hospital Rota on the Iberian Peninsula.

For 250 years, Navy Medicine, represented by more than 44,000 highly trained military and civilian healthcare professionals, has delivered quality healthcare and enduring expeditionary medical support to the warfighter on, below and above the sea, and ashore.
