Assistance with Medicare enrollment available for older adults
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) offers free assistance to those in New Hanover County navigating Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 to December 7.
During this time, it is recommended that all individuals with Medicare review the options available for 2027 to ensure they have the best plan for their respective needs. Both Part D Drug Plans and Part C Advantage Plans have changed and it’s important to compare and evaluate current plans against other options. Reviewing coverage during open enrollment can also help manage Medicare costs for users.
Residents of New Hanover County have three ways to take advantage of open enrollment:
- In-person appointments: Certified volunteer counselors trained by the NC Department of Insurance are committed to helping those in need of assistance understand all the options without pressure to choose a specific plan. To schedule an appointment with these counselors at the NHC Senior Resource Center (2222 South College Road), call 910-798-6442.
- Over the phone: Help is available from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday- Friday by calling the North Carolina Department of Insurance SHIIP Program at 1-855-408-1212.
- Online: Individuals can also review plans online by visiting Medicare.gov. Be sure to look at Plan Details to check Quantity Limits if you are taking medication more than once per day.
No matter the plan, it’s important that all Medicare participants review their options every year between October 15 and December 7 to make sure they’re getting the coverage they need.
The SHIIP program is sponsored by the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center and the NC Department of Insurance. SHIIP offers free, unbiased information about Medicare, Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicare Advantage, long-term care insurance, and other health insurance issues. SHIIP counselors are not licensed insurance agents and they do not sell, endorse or oppose any product, plan or company.
