CAMBRIDGE, UNITED KINGDOM, March 2, 2017 / — Cambridge Company Cell Guidance Systems announced today that it has licensed a new technology, developed by researchers at Cambridge University, which for the first time makes it possible to simulate major events in mouse embryo development without the use of eggs and sperm.
In ground breaking research that was published in the 2nd March issue of Science, Prof Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz and her colleagues studied trophoblast and embryonic stem cells (ESCs), two of the earliest cell types to develop from the fertilized egg. They found that simply growing these two cells together leads to the development of structures termed ETS-Embryos, which strongly resemble mouse embryos in the days immediately following their implantation into the womb. Key to this success was development of “ETS-Embryo Medium” to culture the two stem cell types.
Since in ETS-embryos all of the genetic identity of the embryonic tissues is derived from the ESC, any embryo produced is a clone of that cell. How far ETS-embryos can develop remains still to be determined.
ETS-Embryos are set to transform the fields of embryology and stem cell science. Potential future applications include improving the efficiency of generation of transgenic animals for research and novel ways to make tissues and organs for stem cell research.

Dry Lab Design Considerations

As computers and digital instruments have become more and more central to scientific research, the role of most dry labs has expanded from providing a space for working with dry stored chemicals to a lab space populated with a network of powerful computing systems. There is a light-hearted description for this shift toward computer-based research: while wet labs (working with chemicals and live specimens) make discoveries in vitro, the dry lab discoveries are made in silica using computer software.

Oncology Medical Home Model Demonstration Project Will Support Quality and Value in Cancer Care

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, March 2, 2017 / — The Community Oncology Alliance (COA) commends United States Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Tom Carper (D-DE) for introducing the Cancer Care Payment Reform Act of 2017 (S.463) which establishes a national Oncology Medical Home (OMH) demonstration project to reform the way Medicare pays for cancer care.

The purpose of the bill is to change the way Medicare pays for cancer treatment by supporting high quality, well-coordinated care that lowers costs to patients fighting cancer and the overall health care system. COA will be working with community oncology practices to actively enlist the support of their Senators for this bipartisan legislation and to advance a House companion bill.

Participating oncology practices would then be rewarded with shared savings.
